Substrata Consulting Engineers is a Geotechnical Engineering and Consulting firm serving Northern Colorado and the Denver Metropolitan area. We specialize in geotechnical subsurface explorations, construction materials testing, as well as on-site wastewater treatment system (OWTS) evaluations.
Founded in 2024 by a team of experienced colleagues, we are dedicated to delivering exceptional customer service while providing cost-effective engineering solutions. As a result of the 50+ years of combined experience, our professionals provide thorough and thoughtful recommendations that emphasize quality, safety, and sustainability.

Darrel DiCarlo, P.E.
Co-Founder, Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Darrel is the Geotechnical Engineering Department Head due to his vast experience. He has nearly 30 years of experience in the geotechnical field in Colorado.
Alec Kaljian, P.E.
Co-Founder, Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Alec works primarily in the geotechnical department and oversees laboratory testing. He is experienced with field operations and also assists in developing subsurface exploration reports.
Kreis Rutledge
Senior Engineering Technician
Kreis works in the construction materials testing department and does all of the scheduling for our field technicians. Additionally, Kreis has 25+ years in construction materials testing. He is responsible for scheduling our field technicians for construction materials testing/observations.
Jason Horner, P.E.
Co-Founder, Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Jason is the Construction Materials Testing Department Head. In addition, Jason has over 20 years of experience in the geotechnical and construction materials testing field in Colorado.
Josh Schmidt
Co-Founder, On-Site Wastewater Treatment System Engineering Technician
Josh is a Colorado Professionals in Onsite Wastewater (CPOW) Certified Technician as well as a National Association of Wastewater Technicians (NAWT) Certified Designer. He has extensive experience in septic system design and completes all designs and field observations for On-Site Wastewater Treatment Systems.
